Meaning

The Father of Lights is a scriptural name for the giver of good gifts and wisdom. It appears at the opening, in a prayer for opponents and in the final directions for the practising philosopher. Its recurrence links the ability to inquire with the moral and intellectual reception of illumination.

Use in the book

Page 5 quotes the descent of good and perfect gifts from above and gives James 1:17 in the margin. At p. 35 the invocation asks the Father of Lights to forgive those who blaspheme divine mysteries without knowing what they do. The name makes the failure of understanding a subject for prayer even amid polemic.

At p. 173 the practitioner himself is needy. He must invoke the true Giver for inspired wisdom, mental vision and the right understanding of books. The margin cites James 1:5, so the opening gift and concluding request draw on the same biblical chapter. The light requested is not merely a visual phenomenon in a vessel: it enables discrimination of the written teaching and, in the continuation, right practice.

This title should therefore remain more specific than an undifferentiated word for deity. It gives the book's language of illumination an explicitly scriptural source while refusing to confine need for illumination to the adversary.
