Meaning

Father and mother are the personal images through which the book expresses direction and generation within cosmic mind. The womb is the generative field from which created things emerge, rather than a second substance outside THE ALL.

Use in the book

V first appeals to familiar religious language about divine fatherhood and the motherhood of nature. It then interprets those images through the principle of gender: masculine direction and feminine production jointly describe creation. The author says that the comparison signifies a process, while warning against a merely sexual interpretation.

Near the chapter's close, the language becomes devotional and consoling. Mortal children are at home within Father-Mother Mind, and the universe contains no one without a parent. The source joins its abstract account of infinite mind to an image of belonging and protection.

In this edition

The various capitals and hyphens follow the passage quoted. THE ALL remains beyond the gender distinction even when its creative manifestation is described in these terms.

Reading the argument

The images have both explanatory and emotional work to do. Their reassurance should not be mistaken for a separate demonstration of the metaphysical premise. Nor should the masculine and feminine assignments be expanded into rules about the abilities or social roles of human beings.
