Meaning

Elementals are invisible classes of beings assigned to intermediate mental planes. They are different from chemical elements and from the material particles discussed elsewhere.

Use in the book

VIII places elemental mind A between mineral and plant, B between plant and animal, and C between animal and human. The classes bridge the familiar kingdoms and are said to share features of the levels on either side.

The piano-key image then explains their role: black keys supplement white keys to produce certain harmonies and transitions. The source refers readers to Bulwer's Sanoni for an imaginative recognition of such entities.

Elemental and the variant Elementary Planes are retained. Sanoni is recorded as the source's spelling; the literary work is filed under Bulwer Lytton and Zanoni.

Reading the argument

An intermediate position in a classification does not establish the existence of the entity classified. The reference to an occult novel supplies an imaginative comparison, not independent observation. The author also explicitly withholds a fuller account.
