Meaning

The right door is Magnesia as Nature's first-material entrance to the Art. On p. 183 anyone entering another way is called a sophist and an erring person. The figure restates the necessity of the proper beginning in the cadence of a direct scriptural address.

Use in the book

The context is Khunrath's refusal to teach merely what his opponents wish to hear. He then tells the reader, with doubled affirmation, that entry through the true door is the route to Nature's highest good through chymical help and IEHOVAH's blessing. The margin predicts dissolving, coagulating and fixing, while the continuation on p. 184 promises unlocking and locking.

The door is therefore an entrance to work, not a guarantee that the whole process is already achieved. Nor is the figure a geographical instruction or the common name of a physical object from which Magnesia can be identified. It organizes the sequence of recognition, commencement and subsequent attainment.

The modern note identifies John 10 behind the passage and describes the substitutions. Those changes, especially the Art in place of the sheepfold and the sophist in place of a different intruder, are the substance of Khunrath's application.

Translation in this edition

Do not normalize the adaptation back into a biblical quotation. The extra “right” and the altered destination determine its alchemical sense.

Source note

The operational gloss’s future verbs differ from the imperatives at p. 46. That grammatical change supports the promissory tone without furnishing a timetable.
