Viscus is properly pitch boiled from the tender tops of trees.

Meaning

Properly marks the sense the compiler regards as primary. The entry specifies tender tree tops and boiling as the relation between the starting material and the pitch.

Use in the book

Viscus secundæ generationis is separately defined through blood dropping from salts. The shared name therefore does not make the two materials interchangeable. The qualifying expression changes the gloss.
