Historical definition
Orizeum præcipitatum is gold brought into a cros by the help of the crocus of mercury. 1
Meaning
The definition names gold as the subject and the crocus of mercury as an assisting material. Its result is printed cros. Retaining that difficult word makes the textual problem visible before an explanation is supplied.
Use in the book
Orizeum and Orizeum foliatum establish the shared gold vocabulary. The present qualified expression adds a transformation. Its source does not give quantities, a complete procedure or a description of the final appearance.

In this edition
The original breaks the form as Cro-s. The transcription aid reads Crocus, which is a plausible correction within this vocabulary, but the additional letters are editorial. This edition retains cros in the modernised definition and explains the conjecture in its textual note. Neither the headword’s precipitated qualification nor the conjecture supplies a secure modern identification by itself.
Source note
1. The original divides the form as Cro-s, yielding Cros. This edition retains cros in the definition. The transcription aid supplies Crocus, a conjectural correction explained in the commentary.
