Historical definition

Laxa Chimolea is salt growing upon stones.

Meaning

The place of growth identifies the material. The definition names neither a separate stone nor a salt extracted from one by an operation: it describes salt found growing upon stones. That small difference in preposition matters when following accounts of the origin of materials.

Use in the book

Sal petre and Nebulgea also connect saline materials with stones, but add different accounts of their formation. Their shared setting does not by itself establish that all three names identify the same substance.
