English renderings
intermediate thing, instrument.

Meaning

The intermediate thing connects upper and lower, receives nourishment from both and distributes it onward. In the same paragraph the salt-spirit is an Instrument through which God acts and makes himself heard in the clouds. The two words establish mediation and subordinate agency. Instrument here is not a piece of laboratory apparatus, and the salt-spirit is not a rival creator independent of divine utterance. Its natural efficacy remains derivative in the narrator’s account.
