philosophers’ curse.

Meaning

The inflected phrase names the prohibition or denunciation associated with revealing the philosophers’ art. The narrator says he pays it no heed because his wisdom came from God, not from their books. This is his asserted ground for sharing generously, not the modern editor’s certification of divine revelation. Nor does defying the curse mean he discloses every operation: the preceding explicit withholding beyond philosophers’ mercury remains in force.
