English renderings
heckle, hostile criticism.

Meaning

A heckle is the toothed implement used to comb flax. Being dragged through it is the narrator’s image for hostile criticism by learned doctors, naturalists and chymists. His joke that little hair will be left there expresses indifference to their attacks on his naming of humanity, matter and masterpiece. The word is not an alchemical vessel or apparatus in this passage. The supplied edition explains the material image behind the idiom.
