Meaning

In the story’s financial episode, the prospective patron refuses funding without security, and a district treasurer is persuaded to stand surety. Verlag means the provision of capital for the proposed work, not modern publishing. Caution is the pledged security, whose liability becomes real when the offered process proves false. The treasurer’s earlier sight of tinging explains his confidence but does not protect him from ruin. The vocabulary makes a warning about testimony concrete as a transfer of financial risk between practitioner, patron, and guarantor.
