Meaning

The anonymous excerpt says one first matter divided “in a shock” into four qualities, distinguishing spiritual and bodily elements. The bodily elements are called the spiritual elements’ dwelling-house; the latter give life and movement. This housing image makes mutual relation, not two unrelated inventories, the point of the division. The paragraph then calls air rarefied water and water compacted air. Its additional wording about coagulated water is difficult within that account; a lexicon should preserve the supplied statements rather than silently reconcile them into modern states of matter.
