- plots were being laid, melancholy, little drop of blood, Plots and melancholy.
Meaning
The move to Wittenberg is framed by an announcement that plots were being laid. A later melancholy and a reported sensation of burning blood at the heart foreshadow Sebastian’s death, even though the narrator says he was not ill. The text makes foreboding part of its moral narrative of endangered knowledge. Melancholy here is a reported condition or affect, not enough evidence for a modern diagnosis. Nor does the passage independently establish supernatural foreknowledge merely by narrating the premonition.
