Meaning

The discourse calls matter, fire, and instrument requirements of the lower universal work. Glass can complete chymists’ labours, yet is criticised as heterogeneous, meaning of a different nature from the matter rather than analytically impure; a naturally given material is judged more fitting because matter and fire are themselves nature-formed. Geometrical proportion adds a requirement of relation between instrument and matter, without this passage providing a universal numerical rule. Clay, joints, and luting belong to the accompanying description of construction. Their presence explains the historical apparatus vocabulary; it does not require reproducing an apparatus plan.
