Meaning

In the emblem explanation the butter of antimony is called the solvent of gold; gold is said to undergo putrefaction and become black within it. The subject of fault is gold, not the whole engraving or the reader. Blackening therefore belongs to the father’s asserted material transformation as well as to his reading of the dark solar circle. These claims explain the historical symbolic relation without demonstrating that a modern preparation of a particular formula will have the same action.
