- tartar, sheets, starched, Tartar and stiffened sheets.
Meaning
In the recovery story, the removed sheets are described as stiff with sweat and what this edition renders as exuded tartar. The starching comparison supplies a visible and tactile sign that something has supposedly left the patient’s body. It belongs to the narrative’s evidence for purgation or evacuation, not to an independent analysis of what the deposit contained. The sign’s reading as tartar should remain an edition-level reading; it does not establish that a modern clinician would identify the expelled substance in those terms.
