Lemma.
Carmagnole is the short jacket of revolutionary popular dress in these passages, not the song or dance sharing its name. Dupont wears one; Gamelin gives one to the planned sans-culotte card figure; some jurors wear it with striped trousers. The garment makes allegiance visually recognisable, yet the jury’s other coats, breeches, hats and shoes prevent a picture of an undifferentiated uniform. The complete clothing construction controls the local sense.
