Latin

IN PHYSICAM RESTITVTAM. Epigramma.

En Physicæ iubar exoriens, quam sorte sinistrâ Barbaries Stygiis merserat atra vadis. Sic formæ & dotis Physice sibi damna rependi Aspicit, vt plures speret habere procos. O stupor! ô miro quem non percellit amore! Non Venus è patrio gratior orta mari. Nec se restitui putat his hæc aurea scriptis, Sed nasci è cerebro parturiente Iouis.

English

ON PHYSICS RESTORED. An Epigram.

Behold the rising radiance of Physics, whom, by ill fortune, Dark barbarism had plunged into the waters of the Styx. Physics sees the loss of her beauty and dowry so repaid That she hopes to have more suitors. O wonder! Whom does she not strike with marvellous love! Venus did not rise more lovely from her native sea. This golden lady thinks these writings do not restore her, But give her birth from Jupiter’s brain in labour.
