The Governing Copy and Its Limits
The governing witness is the 1623 Paris printing in the Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon copy digitised by Google Books, volume uJNr_M9LDGgC. The Arcanum has a separate title and pagination within the volume. Its reading text comprises the title, printed pages 3–7 of the address to students, pages 9–96 of canons, and the unnumbered Arcanum errata on the verso of a shared correction leaf. The recto corrects the separate Enchiridion.
The source’s pagination and canon numbering are imperfect. Stable digital scan references identify the physical sequence even where a header repeats or reverses a numeral. The Latin is a readable transcription, not a photographic facsimile: long s is rendered s, typographical ligatures are retained where useful, line-end word divisions are joined, and paragraph and verse boundaries are made readable. Running heads, catchwords and decorative initials do not create duplicate words. Visible reader’s marks are distinguished from printed text when the evidence permits; uncertainty is stated where it does not. Conventional u/v, i/j and ae/æ forms may be regularized for readable Latin; the printed errata’s quoted readings remain explicit.
English, Corrections, and Ambiguity
The English is newly translated from Latin. It follows the author’s sequence and preserves his religious, material, sexual, mythological and cosmological vocabulary. It uses modern syntax without turning the book into a modern laboratory manual or replacing historical substances and principles with speculative chemical identifications. A phrase can support several related readings; an annotation identifies the possibility rather than silently selecting an esoteric code.
Clear corrections supplied by the original errata are adopted in English and explained in notes. The paired Latin retains the visible printed error where it actually occurs, so readers can examine the intervention. The errata sheet is also translated in full. A listed error need not be present in the surviving state of this particular copy. The two initial errata references print pages 2 and 6; their matching passages occur on pages 12 and 16. The translation does not silently repair the historical sheet’s own locators.
Biblical and classical quotations are translated as they occur in this book. They are not silently replaced by a familiar English Bible or modern translation of Virgil. An abbreviated or altered quotation is evidence of the author’s use of a source. Where a confident parallel is available, the notes identify it; unresolved references remain qualified.
Three Identifiable Editorial Layers
The 1623 layer consists of the paired Latin and new English. Original marginal labels are marked as original marginal notes and translated in their own aligned blocks. Modern Diotimos annotations use the continuous footnote sequence. The 1893 reception appendices retain their own historical headings and independent note numbers 1–57. Their statements about authors, dates, gender, spiritual planes or chemical equivalents are not automatically endorsed by this edition.
The historical Signifer image is reproduced from the 1650 English collection and carries its own credit. It assists the later Times of the Stone interpretation. Its presence here does not make it an illustration printed in 1623. The separate English Reading EPUB contains the identical English historical text and annotations, together with the complete study material; only the parallel Latin reading blocks and corresponding reader-facing descriptions are adjusted.
