English

Follow canon 88 through canon 91, then read canon 103. Observe which measures are stated and which require judgment. A contemporary meditation on restraint has strong textual support in these passages, provided it does not claim that their physical language is expendable.

The Work and Its Later Readers

A book’s reception can become so familiar that its later explanations appear to be part of the original. The present witnesses make that risk concrete. The 1623 Arcanum ends at canon 138. The 1650 English collection places other writing and the Signifer after it. The 1893 edition adds its own prefaces and notes and retains the Times of the Stone interpretation.

Each layer changes the reading environment. The zodiacal scheme encourages an ordered association of planets, seasons and colours. Westcott’s notes encourage comparisons with spiritual development and the occult schools of his own period. These are historically significant acts of interpretation. They should be available for study under the names and dates that belong to them.

Compare the final canon, the Times of the Stone, and the 1893 preface. Ask what each later document adds, what it assumes, and what the governing Latin can actually confirm. The result is a richer history of reading without a composite text that obscures its own construction.
