Closing Matter

Where the printed text is a modern conjecture

Every place in this volume where a reader would take something for a fact of the hymn and it is in fact an editor's restoration. Each is flagged in the note at its own line; they are gathered here because the cumulative effect is the point.

— I.1 ἐρεμνήν, dark (Wiel) — the manuscripts give a non-word; the received text since Gesner reads ἐραννήν, lovely.

— proem 7 τ’ (Sanctamandus) — a connective supplied.

— proem 33 ἐμπυριφοίτους (Wiel) — the sixth class of daimones. (Abel files the entry under 32, with the preceding line's τε; the verse is 33, and the marginal numerals govern.)

— proem 39 αὐδῶ (Portus) for αὐλῶν — the main verb of the passage.

— VII.4 πυριρρόθιοι (Wiel) for περιθρόνια.

— IX.12 νέους (Hermann) for τεούς — without it the initiates vanish from the line.

— XIV.2 ᾗ λῖς ταυροφόνος … τιταίνει (Hermann) — Kybele's lion-drawn chariot is not in the manuscripts.

— XV.9 ἀστράπιε (Hermann) for ἀστραπαῖε — Hermann's form occurs nowhere outside these Hymns; the manuscripts' is the one attested in cult.

— LXXVI.10 Εὐνομίῃ (Abel) for the manuscripts' εὐδυνάτῃ — Abel's conjecture removes from its one dative occurrence a word the collection uses seven other times, all of them transmitted and none of them touched by any editor.

— LXXX.6 ἀκτῖσιν (Hermann) — the manuscript reading is not construable, so the printed line is Hermann's sentence.

— LXXXI.2 καμάτου, toil, for the manuscripts' θανάτου, death, unattributed — and the emendation produces a formula the collection has twice elsewhere.

— LXXXIV.3–4 ὁσίαις (Abel) and θεῖσ’ αἰειθαλέας (Hermann) — two editors in consecutive lines turn a vow into a petition.

— LXXXV.7 ἀπάγεις (Wiel) for ἐπάγεις — one preposition reverses the sense: Sleep brings on the rehearsal of death, or takes it away.

Titles the manuscripts give, where Abel gives another

— XVIII — εἰς Τυφῶνα, to Typhon, for Abel's ΕΙΣ ΠΛΟΥΤΩΝΑ.

— XIX — Κεραυνοῦ, Of the Thunderbolt, with no Zeus.

— XX — Διὸς Ἀστραπέως, where Abel prints ΔΙΟΣ ΑΣΤΡΑΠΙΟΥ.

— LXXI — the heading is Lobeck's, not the manuscripts'.

Where Abel's own page is at fault

Recorded, not adopted. Seven wrong sorts — οἰστροῖσα for οἰστροῦσα and γλαυκῶφ’ for γλαυκῶπ’ (both p. 75), ὠκυλόγεια for ὠκυλόχεια (p. 78), θυμίαμα στίρακα (p. 80), `LXIV.` for `LIV.` (p. 86), Ὀλίμπου for Ὀλύμπου (p. 89), and `XLV.` for `LXV.` in the running head of p. 92 — and two omitted marks: the smooth breathing of αγγελιῶτι at LXXVIII.3 and the accent of ἁς at LXXX.6, both in the apparatus.
