p. 283LXXXVIII. To Ares
(no fumigation named)
shedding gently from on high your gleam upon our
life, and warlike strength, that I may be able
to drive bitter cowardice away from my head
and to bend down in my heart the soul's deceiving impulse,
and to hold in the sharp force of spirit that provokes me
to enter the chilling strife. But do you grant me courage,
blessed one, and to remain within the harmless statutes of peace,
escaping the battle-press of enemies and the violent dooms.
