Guide to the Text and Notes
Each comparison unit carries an identifier beginning H001 and a scan reference. A manuscript locator such as 1r identifies the front of a numbered leaf; 1v identifies its reverse where that identification is secure. The facsimile's PDF page numbers correspond to its access-image sequence, not the new edition's pages.
French spelling, accents, capitalization, and punctuation receive restrained normalization for reading. This is a reading transcription, not a claim to reproduce every stroke or spacing decision diplomatically. Consequential anomalies, uncertain words, and editorial interventions are recorded. A bracketed illegible reading indicates a limit of the source evidence, not an omission made for convenience.
Sentence continuations across source pages are preserved. A page may consequently begin or end in the middle of a sentence. A heading that occurs after running text remains at its proper position; the comparison can be divided into subunits to avoid moving it to the top of an earlier passage.
Numbered notes accompany the English. References to biblical or classical passages identify texts or allusions; they do not assert that every phrase has been borrowed verbatim. Interpretive observations are distinguished from source statements. The original manuscript remains the authority for the French presented here.
