Editorial Note

The text

This is an annotated reading edition, not a critical edition established by collation of early printings. Its base is the English transcription made available as electronic text 14209. The source's introduction and fifteen chapters are reproduced in full, including their emphatic capitals, historical vocabulary, and imperfect scientific statements. The original dedication and opening epigraph are reproduced in the front matter. Electronic boilerplate, the source's redundant contents list, reproduced ISBN, and reprint preliminaries are replaced by this edition's own front matter.

Whitespace and line wrapping have been normalized. Lists encoded as single paragraphs in the transcription are displayed as separate lines while preserving their words and order. Source spelling, punctuation, and conspicuous slips are otherwise retained. For example, Imminent in VII, rate of sped in IX, and Love and. Hate in X have not been silently corrected. Notes clarify the first two. A textual fidelity check compares the sequence of words and punctuation in every retained source block before export.

The notes and references

All 182 numbered annotations are new editorial additions. They are numbered continuously through the Original Introduction and XV. Short attributed maxims are set in italics for recognition; this is an editorial typographic treatment because the downloaded source does not consistently preserve the italics promised in I. Other indented source material is not automatically classified as a maxim.

Notes distinguish close explanation, interpretation, historical context, and physical correction by what they say. A claim introduced as the book's teaching is not an assertion of fact by the editor. External comparisons name their sources; a chapter numeral without another author refers to The Kybalion. The notes are a reader's commentary, rather than a comprehensive survey of scholarship or an endorsement of the practices described.

Format

The compact page, serif typography, quiet headings, running title, folios, and page-bottom notes follow the supplied Charmides edition's visual manner. Since The Kybalion is an English work and no translation was requested, it uses one continuous text rather than facing source and translation pages. The print files share a 5.5 by 8.5 inch format.

The PDF preserves pagination. Word contains editable text and native footnotes; pagination may shift with fonts and software. EPUB is reflowable, with linked notes and return links collected after each chapter. Markdown uses footnote definitions and explicit section anchors. None of the digital note arrangements changes the annotation text.
