9 Hermes: Comets as heralds
I.21.9.15 · Wachsmuth pp. 193
There is another kind, Tat, the so-called comets. They appear at the appointed occasion and become invisible again after a short time, neither rising nor setting nor dissolving. They become visible messengers and heralds of general events that are about to occur. Their region lies below the circle of the sun.664
9 Hermes: Appearances in the quarters
I.21.9.16 · Wachsmuth pp. 193-194
Whenever something is about to happen to the world, these appear ⟨and⟩, after appearing for a few days, pass again beneath the sun’s circle and remain invisible. ⟨Some⟩ appear in the east, others in the north, others in the southwest, and others in the south. We have called them diviners. Such is the nature of the stars.665
9 Hermes: A bracketed distinction
I.21.9.17 · Wachsmuth pp. 194
[Stars differ from star-groups. Stars are those borne aloft in heaven; star-groups are those embedded in the body of heaven and carried along with it, twelve of which we have named zodiacal signs.]666
9 Hermes: From understanding to vision
I.21.9.18 · Wachsmuth pp. 194
Whoever has not remained ignorant of these things can understand God precisely; and, if one may venture to say so, can even behold him in direct vision and, having beheld him, become blessed.
⟨TAT⟩ Truly blessed, father, is the one who has beheld him.667
9 Hermes: Preparing the soul
I.21.9.19 · Wachsmuth pp. 194
⟨HERMES⟩ But it is impossible, my child, for someone in a body to attain this good fortune. One must train one’s soul beforehand here, so that when it arrives there, where it is permitted to behold, it may not lose its way. Those who are lovers of the body could never behold the vision of the beautiful and good. What beauty there is, my child, in that which has neither shape nor color nor body!668
9 Hermes: Beauty without body
I.21.9.20 · Wachsmuth pp. 194
⟨TAT⟩ Could anything be beautiful apart from these, father?
⟨HERMES⟩ God alone, my child; or rather, that which is something greater: the name of God.669
