What happens and must happen in the chemical work, I say, must also be carefully observed here in our theological work of the human being’s spiritual renewal and heavenly rebirth. Although our heavenly king Jesus Christ, through the complete obedience he rendered to his heavenly Father in our place, has perfectly redeemed us from all impurity and made us God’s children and heirs, because of our inborn weakness and frailty we cannot wholly grasp and receive his saving, entirely divine tincture, or his other heavenly treasures and goods, nor firmly and securely apply and appropriate them to ourselves. If we are to become capable of and share in them, we must attain them through the following three pure parts or pieces required for this purpose by God himself. First and foremost is his holy Word, pure and refined like gold and silver tried seven times in the earthly crucible, Psalms 12 and 18, indeed to be loved above many thousands of pieces of gold, Psalm 119. Secondly, saving faith, a particular gift of God, John 6; 2 Thessalonians 3, which comes through God’s Word, Romans 10, unites human hearts, Acts 5, and is tried in the fire of tribulation. Thirdly, unfeigned love towards God and one’s neighbour, which is also a gift of God and a fulfilment of the law, Romans 13; indeed God himself is and is called love, 1 John 4. Through these three pure parts—the Word, faith and love—when they are rightly and in due order believed and used, Christ the Lord can first work with true power through his divine tincture and heavenly anointing, accomplishing his projection and saving infusion into us poor and imperfect metals, human beings. Without them we can otherwise scarcely grasp him and rightly partake of his tincture.
