Ich warne vnd berichte dich aber hieinnen / daß du im anfang der andern oder der nacharbeit mit deiner rechnung nicht über diesen character X, mittel oder pũct schreiten / sondern solt just zu zertheilen wissen / vnnd dann ferner mit dem halben theil gemeltes Xaracters (das ist V) in der Composition dieses Wercks zurück weichen sollest. Wann solches geschehen / so kanstu als dann hernach / wann du es wider zusammen richtest / vnd ein XX.theil recht vberschlecht in derselben zahl oder zeit (so fern sonsten nichts verhinderlichs dazwischen einfel) mit deinem werck auch zum end gelangen. Mit solcher zeit laß dir gnügen / sintemal den Termin näher zusuchen sehr mißlich / vnd bald darmit gefehlet ist. Dann eine stunde dich einen gantzen monat hindan wirfft / oder so du es triffst / vmb ein solche zeit dich befördern thut. Doch habe acht / daß du nichts gar zu genau rechnest / oder wie vorgemelt / gar darüber kommest: Dann so das geschehe / du eine mißgeburt erheben würdest / darin mancher durch sein vermeintes eilen / oder vnbestendigkeit / auff seinen verhofften ELIXIR ein NIXIR erlangt vnd bekommen hatt.

I warn and instruct you, however, that at the beginning of the other or subsequent work your reckoning must not go beyond this character X, the middle or point. You must know how to divide it exactly, and then, in the composition of this work, step back with half of that character, namely V. When this has been done, put it together again and properly reckon a XX part: within that number or time, provided no other hindrance intervenes, you may bring the work to its end. Be content with that time, for seeking a more precise term is very uncertain and easily leads to error. A single hour can throw you back a whole month or, if you hit it correctly, advance you by the same amount of time. Take care nevertheless not to calculate too narrowly, nor, as already said, to go beyond it. If that happens you will produce a malformed birth. Many people, through their supposed haste or inconstancy, have obtained a NIXIR instead of the ELIXIR they hoped for.

The work is traditionally attributed to Johann Siebmacher; this remains an attribution, not a name printed in the anonymous witness. The separately sourced First and Second Responses use the 1661 Wolfenbüttel witness, qun-642-1s, pp. 200–206.
