Sal Lumen and Spiritus Mundi Philosophici: Book Two · Chapter 1
1621 pp. 63–65 · scans FR083, FR084, FR085I believe I have sufficiently shown in the preceding book that through the general spirit all things in the universe are not only produced but embodied. It remains, however, to explain what body this spirit takes, and how it is itself embodied while embodying all other things. For since they take all their bodies from it alone, it must necessarily be bodily itself: it is unreasonable to believe that it could give what it had never possessed. Let us therefore see what body it clothes itself in, and in what manner it is clothed. Yet I do not intend to dispute here about the embodiment of celestial and supernatural things, but only to confine my discourse to natural, sublunary generations, and to the body of the earth, which is the vessel and proper womb in which this first and general giver of body to things is itself embodied. I say, then, that no embodiment can take place without a preceding mover which draws potentiality into action, so that what seems not to exist may come into the light and reach the end and accomplishment of Nature’s intention, which is always to embody what she wishes to produce.
