These three always unite and bind together, as we see in human beings, and through this union make the vital spirit complete and constitute bodily substance. The soul of the universe therefore fashions and imagines various specific forms, which the spirit receives within the entrails of the elements, embodies and brings into the light. That is why animals generate only animals, plants plants, and minerals minerals. Yet they do not do so in every respect in the same manner. For minerals, as I said above, do not generate their like as plants do, because the spirit they possess is checked and oppressed by matter too coarse and heavy. Once this spirit is drawn out and added to mineral matter, it will be able to generate its like. For, having acquired ingress and entry into imperfect bodies through art’s great subtilisation and the graduated application of fire, it has drawn from the universal soul only its own mineral seeds, not those of animals or plants, since that would oppose Nature. I do not mean that it lacks the action of the other powers within itself, but that it manifests them only according to the species to which it is adapted.
