From this it appears that each thing and species draws its gifts and powers from the world soul: not all of them entirely, but those belonging to its seed and others that accord with it, through which it sprouts and multiplies. An example can be seen and observed in human beings, who, nourishing themselves only with food suited to humans, do not acquire the nature of the birds or fish they have eaten, but the human nature appropriate to their species. It also happens that several other animals live upon the same foods and nourishment, from which each nevertheless draws what is proper to its species. Thus it is truly admirable that from the same food a human draws what is proper to a human, and a bird or animal what suits birds or animals. This takes place, not because a single food contains diverse and varying nourishments, but because of the species being nourished, which draws in and transforms into itself the nourishment that accords with it. Through this it generates its like, by the power of the soul and seminal reason within it, according to its quality.
