Hortulan, who commented upon the table of Hermes, leaves aside Nature’s root principles and descends to the particular principles of alchemy. By the sun he understands philosophical gold, which he calls the father of the stone; and this is true. For those enlightened in this art know by experience, and have learnt from all the good authors, whose number is infinite, that within the true matter and subject of the stone there are gold and silver potentially, and quicksilver in nature. This gold and silver are better than those ordinarily seen and touched, because they are alive and can grow and increase, whereas the ordinary ones are dead. Were this not so, the matter would never reach the extreme perfection which art gives it. This perfection is so great that it perfects imperfect metals almost miraculously, as Hermes says. Yet this invisible gold and silver, raised through the magistery to so high a degree, could not communicate this perfection to imperfect metals without the agency of ordinary gold and silver. For this reason the masters add the latter during fermentation. Thus gold is always the father of the elixir.
