1621 pp. 19–20 · scans FR039, FR040The heaven sown with fires, the earth and flowing sea, The gleaming stars and shining moon, Are all nourished by an inward spirit, And the vitality of a soul infused on every side Through all the members moves the entire mass, And mingles with the great body that embraces both. Augurel, in imitation of him: Since it is therefore a well-established thing That soul is embodied in the world’s body, We must believe that between these two Lies a powerful and vigorous spirit, Which should be called neither body nor soul, But which shares in both, and alone Can bring these two extremes together as one Through its effects, well bounded in every respect.
