1621 pp. 7 · scans FR027But everyone will come at last to believe That metals live in secret, And possess the power and place of life Divinely, as a gift from God. And what makes these worthy metals Appear not to generate their like, Still less to have such power As to turn other things into themselves, Is that the spirit which gives full life Is hindered by matter too heavy, And cannot show the power With which Nature has richly clothed it, Unless human industry and active power Make room for it, so that it may live, And unless the worker strives to extract it From the thick matter that conceals it.
