Sonnet 9
Sal Lumen and Spiritus Mundi Philosophici: Sonnet 9
1621 pp. 332 · scans FR340Whoever therefore seeks the world’s honour, glory and happiness, Let him be philosopher and practitioner, and he will enjoy them; For philosophy will at last lead him To the summit of the treasures in which Nature abounds. It will dispel from him the night of error On which blind opinion vainly rests, And brighten the daylight of truth, Drawing it out from the bosom of the rounded world. When Jason had won that good so greatly desired, Which through experience assured him Of living rich and healthy beyond what he had dared believe, Disdaining misery and defying death, Equal to the demigods, did he not possess The universal world’s happiness, honour and glory?
