Sonnet 8
Sal Lumen and Spiritus Mundi Philosophici: Sonnet 8
1621 Unnumbered sonnet leaf 8 · scans FR338The great God who gives and preserves life in all Established, as a remedy for souls and bodies, Two purifiers of every foul defilement With which corruption invites them to vice. He provides for and forestalls the ills of both, Opening to them the treasures of earth and Heaven, Treasures most sovereign against the harsh assaults Which envious death makes upon soul and body. These are the two authors of our restorations, Participating in earth and Heaven, To mediate an alliance between the extremes. Therefore each descended from Heaven Down into earth, and flew again to Heaven, To descend once more to earth with all power.
