1621 Unnumbered preliminary pages · scans FR014, FR015, FR016A further legitimate excuse should also be accepted. My undertaking is so closely linked with and dependent upon his that, had death possessed eyes and judgement to see and consider the wrong it did mortals by extinguishing so beautiful and useful a light before its time, or had the prayers and cries of learned seekers been able to soften the impiety of that deaf and insatiable creature and gain him a little further respite, he would undoubtedly have used the same hand to set in the pure gold of his fertile mine the precious Emerald Table. In it that ancient Egyptian philosopher, following his wise predecessors, engraved the double mystery, or the single mystery with a double meaning, which Hortulanus and some others have applied wholly to the effecting of their metallic transmutations. I have endeavoured to bind it by an indissoluble knot to his Pimander, with which it has so much agreement and sympathy that the two seem to have been composed for one another. For if the former treats the creation of the universe, the latter plainly depicts the universal spirit which gives life and movement to every member of this great body. Within that universal spirit the living seeds of the three kinds are secretly enclosed. From it all things are brought forth in the world; by it they grow, endure and multiply; and into it they must all return when they have reached the limit which Nature has set for them.
