Sonnet 6
Sal Lumen and Spiritus Mundi Philosophici: Sonnet 6
1621 Unnumbered sonnet leaf 6 · scans FR336As, to adorn the undigested mass, Nature first employed separation, So every art aiming at perfection Must follow this rule and manifest path. Substance everywhere bears the excrement infecting it, Whether through earthly slime or scorching; But Art, through washing or calcination, Using water or fire, banishes that plague. Art’s skill alone can separate And afterwards regenerate through new life All in all, freeing the pure soul from every fault. Whoever therefore understands the art of using water and fire Knows the two true paths which climb little by little To the highest of all Nature’s secrets.
