Sonnet 5
Sal Lumen and Spiritus Mundi Philosophici: Sonnet 5
1621 Unnumbered sonnet leaf 5 · scans FR335In the universal spirit, containing the seed Of death as well as life, we must consider A double power and admire it doubly, Through sap or venom, both double in their essence. The double sap maintains all bodies by its presence; The double venom likewise makes them all waste away, Preserving and destroying through sweet and bitter salt, With a kindly power or harsh violence. These are its faculties before it has emerged From the uncleanness of its limbus and chaos, Having the same effects when drawn out upon the earth. But when it has received the separation Of sap and venom through preparation, Then, wholly good, it wages mortal war on every ill.
