Sonnet 4
Sal Lumen and Spiritus Mundi Philosophici: Sonnet 4
1621 Unnumbered sonnet leaf 4 · scans FR330God, Nature and Art, incomparable triad, Transport every mind into admiration Of design, labour and perfection, In which the incredible power of all three shines. Though God is inimitable in his lofty purposes, Nature in her progress follows his intention; Then Art, adding to the simple action, Makes Nature admired and itself admirable. Whoever contemplates and understands with profound judgement God, Nature and Art sees and knows how they act, Ordering, producing and perfecting things. For God, Nature and Art, in a divine triangle, Are the beginning, middle and end Of everything, enclosing within themselves all powers.
