Book Three
Sal Lumen and Spiritus Mundi Philosophici: Book Three
1621 pp. 326–328 · scans FR326, FR331, FR332Without these blessings life is no life at all, but a hateful languishing, like a tumultuous sea where winds blowing against one another overturn wave upon wave and finally swallow our poor tossed vessel into the deepest dark abysses of death. From birth we have as inward enemies the squadron of diseases, almost infinite in number, and outwardly the accursed battalion of troubles led by inhuman poverty. When these two adversaries conspire against life and pursue their secret agreements, consider what defence could preserve it from their assaults. Besides these, the scorn and changes of fortune do further harm. Against fortune the human spirit, clothed in the unassailable and invincible arms of august wisdom, stands courageously opposed. With what praises, then, could we sufficiently and worthily adorn the person who first revealed philosophy’s principles and precepts to us? Rather, how could the human spirit penetrate so powerfully to the heart of the world and Nature through the search for such wonders? The first person to fall under so favourable a star that he could understand and practise these lofty and hidden mysteries through experience supported by reason Was the child of a god, or some god inspires him.
