It is especially necessary, rather, to enter the body of the world and take there that universal life which never fails, but carries its multiplication and expansion within itself. We may then bring it forth in ourselves to the extent that the powers of our natural composition can bear it. We must not imagine that this can make us immortal, for everything bearing corporeal mass within itself, that is, excrement and corruption, cannot endure perpetually. We would have to be stripped of all bodily matter before reaching that condition. After this stripping away, our life, remaining free, truly resembles the universal life of the great world. Reuniting with it, life rejoices in it as in its own nature, following the rule that everything returns to the place from which it departed. This is what Theophrastus meant by the soul of those who will live in the fifth: those released from the mass composed of the four elements, who will live in a fifth more perfect than the four. Only an intelligence imbued with the essential fragrance of philosophy can comprehend this secret. This fifth element is not something situated above earth, water, air and fire, as though, when chaos was separated, it had risen higher than they through greater lightness. It is properly a spirit simple in itself, mingling everywhere without distinction, nourishing and animating everything and giving being to all things. Nevertheless, in its centre, that is, in its own nature, it is free from all corporeality, which is the true dwelling of death. Since its bodily consistency comes to it from bodies, it must necessarily, before that consistency and determination to a species, be entirely simple and purely spiritual, neither mixed nor entangled in the confusion of the assembled elements, and consequently not subject to corruption and death. Yet death in bodies is not the annihilation of this spirit, but only its separation and banishment. Perceiving that the corrupting sulphur which masters the whole body is seizing and occupying it entirely, the spirit is compelled to abandon the place and return whence it came, to the centre of that great sphere of life, leaving the corporeal and excremental masses to the earth from which they were taken.
