This prince is rich and abundant Nature, who through divine meditation has constructed this great palace of the world. In its midst she has placed the globe of the earth as her private chamber, gathering there her most precious possessions through the contributions she exacts from all the other members and provinces of the universe. From this inexhaustible treasury she continually draws the maintenance of her building and the sustenance of all her creatures. She has lodged them in the earth for this reason, so that, like children, they may always be close to their mother’s breast. Everything living in the world inhabits this earth, sensing by natural instinct that the storehouse and source of life are established within it. Thus bodies capable of sensation range about it in search of nourishment, while, like a kindly mother, she gives and supplies that nourishment to insensible bodies. Through the benefit of growth she sustains and increases both. Those attached to her by roots, like a child attached to its mother’s womb by the navel, receive and draw their food and drink from her without labour. That is to say, they draw their life, which fails them as soon as they are separated and cut off from her, as we see daily in uprooted trees and severed branches.
