Book Three
Sal Lumen and Spiritus Mundi Philosophici: Book Three
1621 pp. 305–306 · scans FR305, FR306A magnificent and ingenious prince who wishes to build a sumptuous palace will command the architects, once they have arranged its principal parts and designed their adornments, to make a private chamber in the safest and most convenient place, where he can deposit and preserve his treasures and most precious documents of title. Besides the pleasure he may take in this, he will then be able at the appointed moment to withdraw for himself whatever he wishes to give, without the exercise of his generosity depending upon anyone else. Many great men are often shamefully compelled to beg from their servants, even at the risk of an impudent refusal, some gift of little value with which they wish to acknowledge the merits of a virtuous man.
