Knowing, then, that the two parts of the human being had been created one within the other—the spirit within the body—and that the body is continually besieged by corruption through the sensuality that attracts and entices it into excess, bringing infection and wasting to all its members, he foresaw that the spirit which dwells there as a guest could not remain exempt from its contagious corruption. Indeed, we commonly see that someone wholly given over to bodily excess and unrestrained sensuality becomes, by the same means, wicked and licentious in every disorder of the spirit. Such a person defaults on the love and fear of God, on honour and glory in the world, on dutiful affection towards their own family, and on charity towards their neighbour. Thus, when they die miserably, wallowing in the mire of their crimes, the spirit cannot fail to share in the punishments as it has shared in the pleasures. And considering that the whole human race, ever since the first transgression brought about by the bites taken from the forbidden apple, had never ceased to hasten towards this death, and that the ruin of the whole human being was thereby incurable, he forestalled this misfortune with a wonderful remedy beyond human comprehension.
