Sal Lumen and Spiritus Mundi Philosophici: Book Two · Chapter 3
1621 pp. 161–162 · scans FR181, FR182From the mass of dregs that gathered below around the centre, earth was formed, supplied with the true substance, but confused within its coarse thickness, after Phoebus had killed the monstrous Python, swollen with the poisonous moisture that had been generated amid the earthly slime. That is, after the innate dryness had drunk up the superfluous moisture through the operation of natural heat, earth began to feel the actions of this substance hidden within her bosom. That substance is this spirituous matter, never idle but ceaselessly occupied in engendering and giving life. It should properly be called earth here, because it truly is earth’s own efficacious substance, and it alone engenders all bodies through its own embodiment, according to the ideas of individual beings. I formerly depicted this in the Pindaric Ode dedicated to the great Duke of Alençon, my most honoured lord and master, from which I shall quote a few verses to this purpose.
