But since this admirable craftswoman performs such operations in secret, working only within bodies through hidden digestion, and never going beyond that simple perfection to which her power extends, so that the corporeal Elements cannot lead the bodies enclosing them to the highest degree of their property, the Philosophers prudently devised a way to separate this substance wholly from the corrupting mass, and after that separation lead it along Nature’s paths, namely digestions and sublimations, to the highest degree of purity. They acquire for things a new form through a second generation, so that they have removed their entire first Nature, quality and property; or rather, have changed what was impure body into a spirit full of purity, and what was moist and cold into heat and dryness. They practise this not only upon species and simples, but also upon the great compound of the world, which is our universal spirit. For unless the universal Nature of things is renewed, it cannot possibly attain the state of incorruptibility and renovation. Regeneration is therefore the first fruit produced by separation. But just as a grain can engender nothing of itself unless it dies and rots in the earth, so nothing can be renewed and regenerated except through a preceding mortification. Mortification is therefore the first rung by which to climb to separation, and the only path to reach it. For while bodies remain in their old corruption and birth, separation can never intervene in them unless mortification, that is, putrefaction and dissolution, has first passed through them.
