These poisons, entering and penetrating bodies along with the substance, therefore never cease increasing and accumulating there until they have darkened, indeed extinguished, the light of life and mastered the action proper to Nature, which is to give life, unless medicine and separation hindered and removed them. It is therefore the excrements that cause corruption, which comes to us in two ways. The first is from the seed of parents who, being unhealthy and corrupted, produce impure and corrupted seed that grows worse from generation to generation. Yet it is subject to correction by medicines that arrest the course of this active corruption tending towards death. This is properly that accursed Satan who goes round the world, ceaselessly seeking to devour poor mortals. For this reason he prowls around the earthly globe, that is, around the world’s excrements, whose chief seat is in the earth, which itself vomits its corruption upon the other elements. Thus human beings, living on them and in them, are corrupted within them and by them, and hence can have only corrupted seed, which with time continually grows more corrupt. For our age, more vicious and dissolute than that of our forebears, has made us a worse offspring than our fathers’ generation; and from us will come one more depraved, which will produce another capable of surpassing it in excess. The other source of corruption springs from foods abounding in excrementitious matter, by which bodies are infected, so that this infection slips from father to son, as we see in leprosy and other hereditary diseases. These foods acquire their corruption from the place where they are generated.
