This medicine acts like fire in consuming the impure that it separates from the pure, through a perpetual banishment of heterogeneous parts and an adoption of homogeneous ones. Since Heaven has therefore engendered this virgin in earth’s womb, she has rightly retained her parents’ powers. Just as the child, naturally sharing the humours of father and mother through the mixture of their seeds, was called by the ancient sages a name properly compounded from those of its two begetters, namely Androgyne, which the poets called Hermaphrodite, because it could not yet be called man or woman, being incapable of producing the effects of either, so it is fitting to give this virgin the name Uranogee, or Heaven made earthly; for, although earth, she nevertheless possesses within herself, through their powers, all the Heavens enclosed and joined by an indissoluble bond, whose admirable operations she displays. Of these I have already given sufficient disclosure here to those who, by the light of their noble intellect, can pass through the shadowy thickness of the black forest; and, as Virgil says, to whom it will be granted from above to enter earth’s dark dungeons.
