This cannot occur without increase following, together with preservation and restoration: the one through unfailing maintenance of life, the other through infinite replenishment of what is employed and distributed in generating the species. This is plainly seen in this embodied first matter, which, made pregnant by celestial impregnation, nourishes, multiplies and increases itself through a living source of nourishment and increase that flows inexhaustibly. This is why it is called a dragon or serpent luxuriating within itself, continually reborn and germinating like plants, wherever it may be. Thus any spot or place once populated by it will never be deprived of it, whatever washing or burning may be done there. This is certainly one of the most notable signs by which this first matter may be discerned. These, then, are the principal powers which this universal spirit received from celestial influences at the world’s beginning, and will receive until its end, continually producing marvellous effects in all members of this great universal body. But I might be asked why this first matter, which I have said receives so many pure and efficacious influences from Heaven, is usually found stuffed with so many vicious qualities; and how it retains them after receiving them, seeing that it is ceaselessly engaged in acts of separation, vivification, increase, preservation and restoration. For if it does not separate, it must mortify; and if it does not increase, preserve and restore, it must diminish, destroy and weaken, which in truth it never does. I reply that the stars have a double influence, one natural and the other accidental.
