Sonnet 3
Sal Lumen and Spiritus Mundi Philosophici: Sonnet 3
1621 Unnumbered sonnet leaf 3 · scans FR329It is a certain truth, filled with wonder, That above and below are but one and the same thing, To produce, from one thing enclosed throughout the world, Marvellous effects through adaptation. The meditation of one has made all from one, And as its parents, womb and nurse are named Phoebus, Diana, air and earth, where rests That thing in which all perfection lies. If it is tinged into earth, its power is entire, Separating by great art, yet in an easy manner, The subtle from the thick, and earth from fire. From earth it rises to Heaven; then into earth It descends from Heaven, receiving little by little The powers of both, which it encloses in its womb.
